Florida Staycation - Breakfast and Breakers

They say its the most important meal of the day. But who the heck are they, and what do they know? American breakfast standards bore me. Give me the continental breakfast buffet at my local motel, and I'm good to go with yogurt and a banana.

Hold the eggs, bacon, grits, biscuit and for GOODNESS SAKES hold the sausage gravy - what in the name of all that is holy IS that, anyway??? It's like library paste thinned out with motor oil and a cup of salt. Non, merci. Here are a couple of lovely breakfasts I've enjoyed in and around Jacksonville and the Beaches area.

At least once a week I like to stop in at Bakery Moderne for a cup of coffee and pastry or a mini-quiche - they make at least two varieties of quiche fresh daily, and the scones are lovely, crumbly soft and laden with fresh fruit.

Late breakfast at Culhane's involves Bangers and Mash, and yes, frankly, a pint of Guinness as well. Don't judge. You know you want it.

One of my favorite spots for breakfast is Biscotti's in Avondale. The atmosphere there reminds me of Cincinnati - can't tell you why. Anyway, they have some slightly awesome breakfast offerings, including some over the top french toast, and this quiche, that has an unusual but awesome crust.

I was obsessed enough after eating this one that I made my own for another couple of weeks - until I decided it was easier and more rewarding to go out and enjoy it at Biscotti's.

Check out Mi Pueblo Bakery on Beach Boulevard for a latin twist to the grab-and-go breakfast. I wrote about them in my Serious Sandwiches segment last year.  The Buneulo gets my vote for a quick bite. Savory cheesy goodness, Charlie...

And while we're talking Latin influence - one of my absolute favorite pastries in Jax is this Guava Pocket from Edgewood Bakery. Sweet tart guava jelly loaded with sugary glaze, piled into a crispy layered pastry square.

OK - that's enough! I need to go walk on the beach and shed some of these virtual calories!

I hope it is sunny and warm where you are today - enjoy your summer. I'll be back soon with more from my Summer Staycation. Woop-woop!

bb's - a groovy place to b

Jacksonville’s new TasteCasting team recently assembled at one of Jacksonville’s Top 25 restaurants and perennial favorite – bb’s – where we were treated to a four course tasting menu – courtesy of owners Barbara and Karin. Our host for the evening was Executive Chef Carlos Ramirez.

Originally from Columbia and trained at Johnson and Wales, Chef Ramirez’ prowess in the kitchen is matched by his attentiveness to the restaurant’s clientele. He spent a great deal of time with our TasteCasting team, thoroughly describing each dish as it was presented and answering all of our questions.

We were treated as honored guests, and we are grateful for the special attention paid to our group by of one of Jacksonville’s premier chefs.

To begin our tasting we were treated to a Shrimp Bisque – creamy and sweet like shrimp fresh from the sea, with just enough heat.

Next up was an assortment of salads. bb’s is one of Jacksonville’s power lunch spots, and their salads are a local favorite.

Mediterranean Chicken Salad boasts shredded white meat of chicken on a bed of greens, with tender haricots vert, briny kalamata olives, sweet grape tomatoes, tangy, full flavored feta cheese and a bright, light lemon herb vinaigrette.

Pan Asian Chop Chop Salad is a study in contrasting tastes and textures – field greens with juicy grilled chicken, macadamia nuts, pickled ginger, rice noodles, sweet soy, wasabi drizzle and sesame ginger vinaigrette.

Grilled Salmon Salad reminded us of autumn – chargrilled salmon served on a bed of greens over a dried fruit and nut couscous, and topped with a dollop of pumpkinseed pesto.

A personal favorite is the Goat Cheese Salad

Field greens are tossed with sweet slivers of Medjool dates, candied walnuts and strips of Black Forest ham. Warm, tangy goat cheese is nestled in thickly sliced toasted baguette and drizzled with honey.

Crispy Fried Rock Shrimp salad was dressed with tangerine cream and a lemon herb vinaigrette. The sweet little shrimp were studded with black sesame seeds.

The entrees showcased a range of flavor profiles, while bringing into focus the Chef’s Latin heritage.

Sofrito Spiced Half Chicken was earthy and filling. Topped with fried onions and served with saffron rice pilaf, baby spinach, and drizzled with mojo infused aioli.

One taster’s Chargrilled Skirt Steak was perfectly cooked – i

t came with chorizo whipped potatoes, roasted plum tomato, caramelized onions and cilantro chimichurri She was quite taken with the addition of chorizo to the whipped potatoes. A simple pairing – almost instinctive – and brilliantly executed. Subtle touches like these define the bb’s experience.

Grilled Wahoo was topped with parmesan-peppercorn crust and served alongside a lighter than air sweet corn and shrimp fritter and haricots verte. Arugula-lemon pesto and white truffle aioli elevated the dish to something truly memorable.

Cellentani Pasta was perfectly cooked and sauced with a rustic pomodoro, studded with clams, spicy Italian sausage

, onions and zucchini, and finished with dollops of goat cheese.

One benefit to tasting size portions is that we got this far and still had room for dessert!

There is something for everyone in the dessert case at bb’s and sister restaurant Biscottis. There are ten to sixteen dessert selections on any given day, and the selection changes hourly.

Their desserts are widely considered to be some of the best in town. Desserts like these are an obligatory indulgence.

We enjoyed tasting portions of a few of the most popular selections. Dessert portions are ample, and sharing is encouraged.

Among the selections the night we visited:

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Cake

PeanutButter Mousse Cake

Cappucino Mousse Cake

The Classic Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting was a team favorite. Incredibly moist, dense and flavorful.

bb’s Chocolate Truffle Cake is legendary – this taster recommends a jammy Cabernet to sip along with it.

It would be easy to overlook the Croissant Bread Pudding with all the fancy cakes and tortes beckoning from behind the gleaming dessert case, but do yourself a favor and try it next time you’re there. It is worth every calorie. Our tasters kept coming back to it, even after tasting just about every offering in the dessert case!

bb’s is consistently voted one of the top 25 best restaurants in Jacksonville by numerous local publications, and has received the wine spectator ‘award of excellence’ year after year.

They boast an award winning wine list with over 50 wines by the glass, many $7 and under, and a full bar – they make fab martinis and mojitos! They have catering and take-out menus as well. Also worth noting is bb’s Brunch menu – served Saturdays 11am – 2pm.

A big, warm Thank You to Barbara and Karin, the staff at bb’s, and especially Chef Carlos Ramirez.

bb’s truly is a groovy place to b!

favorite food haunts - jacksonville and the beaches

Bistro Aix
Bistro Aix on Urbanspoon
Provençal bistro in San Marco. Transcendent. Seriously - their smoked tomato bisque haunts my dreams. Steak frites, lamb panini, luscious little pizzas, oak grilled fish, pastas, its all delicious. Bistro Aix is my number one restaurant pic in our adopted home town of Jacksonville, Florida (we actually live in a nearby beach town, but work in Jax).

bb's
Bb's on Urbanspoon
This industrial chic jewelbox is sister to biscotti's, and serves up comfort/fusion. My favorite, cheesy creamy hot polenta sticks stacked lincoln log style on a pool of blue cheese vinaigrette. They make some of the best salads anywhere in town. One of my standing orders is field greens with black forest ham, dates, and honey drizzled goat cheese croutons. The main room can be noisy, but the mood is upbeat, and the service is excellent. They share a phenomenal dessert menu with biscotti's. Share a slice of the nut tart - it is so incredibly rich, a mouthful is more than enough ;)

biscotti's
Biscotti's on Urbanspoon
Cozy neighborhood bistro in Avondale. Reminds me of some great spots in Cincinnati. Biscottis recently expanded to accommodate the constant crowds. While you wait for your table you are encouraged to peruse the dessert case - incredible, impposibly huge cakes, pies, tarts and more. My favorite from their eclectic menu is the rock shrimp pizza with goat cheese and baby spinach. Great spot for a late night apre-theater nosh - my friend Amy and I love to sit outside, savor a glass of red wine (the by the glass menu is awesome) and split a slice (ok, its more like a slab) of chocolate cake.

Blue Boy Sandwich Shop

Blue Boy Sandwich Shop on Urbanspoon
Because every once in a while you want a great tasting, greasy hamburger the size of your head. This place is a working man's dream - no fuss, no frills, just standard lunch grub and plenty of it. Self serve drink refills ensure you'll always have enough soda to wash down every last bite. Jax insiders know this place is the bomb.

Cafe Nola

Cafe Nola on Urbanspoon
Delicious, innovative cuisine in a bright, contemporary gallery setting. Open for lunch Monday through Friday. Menu changes seasonally - recent favorite is the Lobster Cobb Salad.

The Casbah

The Casbah Cafe of Avondale on Urbanspoon
Middle-Eastern menu, belly dancers, hooka pipes. Nestled in a quiet courtyard in downtown Avondale. For lunch we like the swordfish kabobs with a selection of appetizers - you'll fall in love with their creamy smooth hummus, tabouleh, falafel, fried jibneh.

Cool Moose Cafe

Cool Moose Coffee Company on Urbanspoon
Chef/owner Tony Jarvis has a loyal following at his Five-points favorite spot. Serving Green Mountain Coffee, great cookies and muffins, and a sweet lunch menu with something for everyone. The Turkey sandwich with cranberry chutney is like Thanksgiving all year long. A ham sandwich with boursin cheese makes me happy-happy, and Cool Moose is one place where I will actually eat the ubiquitous pasta salad. Easy on the pocketbook, which means more money to spend while browsing through the nearby antique shops.

The French Pantry
French Pantry on Urbanspoon
French farmhouse meets California casual. The French Pantry owners Tim and Barbara Felver previously worked for Wolfgang Puck in LA. Good fortune for us, they now reign supreme over this improbable 5,000-square-foot warehouse plunk in the middle of the Powers Ave. industrial district. A wholesale bakery delivers breads, rolls and desserts to restaurants, hotels and country clubs in Jacksonville. The restaurant makes me very, very happy. Friends in the know will beat me about the head with a baguette when I tell you just how happy. The French Pantry is one of those classic "best kept secrets" - yet there is always a crowd. Come early, get in line, get your food, pick up some incredible baked goods to go, and get out! Or if you are not in any hurry, linger at one of the communal French farmhouse style tables, and munch on their mind altering bread slathered with sweet creamery butter while you wait for your salad or sandwich to arrive. Tell 'em the gang at Nourish The Beast sent you!

The Grotto
The Grotto on Urbanspoon
Wine and tapas in San Marco. Local's love the Grotto. Toney little spot with a fantastic wine list - retail wines too. Great spot for a private or semi-private party.

Harpoon Louie's
Harpoon Louie's on Urbanspoon
Burgers al-fresco rock this Avondale neighborhood joint with a blue collar bent. The Blue Cheese stuffed "squirtin'" burger is the bomb. Pin-ball, pool tables, porch. 'nuff sed.

Havana Jax Cafe
Havana Jax Café on Urbanspoon
Enjoy classic Cuban comfort food at this Best of Jax perrenial favorite, then slip next door to Cuba Libre for a cool Mojito.

Hovan
Mediterranean Gourmet
Hovan Mediterranean Gourmet on Urbanspoon
Five Points lunch spot popular with students and neighboring office workers alike. Gyros, falafel, hummus, salads, the best ingredients, simply prepared and presented. Easy on the pocketbook as well as the heart. Fast service, plenty of seating, aditional parking in rear.

Joseph's Pizza

Joseph's Pizza on Urbanspoon
Joseph's Pizza rocks the Atlantic beach pizza scene. By the slice or by the box, get yours with extra garlic. Perfect end to a night of bar-hopping in AB.

Lemongrass
Lemongrass on Urbanspoon
Thai in Baymeadows. The soothing decor and perfectly presented dishes come together to make this a favorite spot to grab lunch whenever I'm on that side of town. Shrimp in peanut sauce with broccoli is pretty awesome, but I like the soups and green curry too. Same owners as The Thai Room at Jax Beach.

London Bridge
(CLOSED) English pub and grub in downtown Jax. Go for the Bangers and Mash.

The Loop
Famous for their burgers, The Loop is anything but a burger joint. This Jacksonville based franchise takes the fast food atmosphere and stands it on its head, with great salads, pizzas, soups and sandwiches. Graze your way through the entire menu - it is all great.

Maggiano's Little Italy
Maggiano's Little Italy on Urbanspoon
Chain, yes, but it's just the kind of clubby Italian-style spot I like. Their tastes of Little Italy are served up family style - which can be a bit much for couples or solo diners, so plan on taking home some great leftovers for your lunch. I love their Chicken Parm, and the Rigatoni D takes chicken and mushrooms to a whole new level. Valet park at St Johns Town Center, you don't want to waste time looking for a parking spot. If you want to order to go you can drive around back to pick it up - Great for no-cook nights.
